After you sign up for your free trial, click on manage accounts. It will take you to your membership page. There will be a box with name and trial dates and right under that there will be a turn off auto update button. Click that and your membership will not automatically upgrade after your free trial, therefore your credit card will not be charged after your free trial.
Please note that you can only order items from Amazon.com with this offer. You cannot buy from private sellers.

I joined and ordered already. The $10 is automatically credited once
you join. However, it does not show up in the "View Your Balance or
Redeem a New Gift Certificate/Card" section of your account but it does
credit when you order an item. Also, you recieve free 2 day shipping
when you join Amazon Prime.
Just remember the trial is free for only 1 month.
